Brijean, since their debut, the project of percussionist/singer-songwriter Brijean Murphy (the percussive heartbeat for live bands like Mitski, Poolside, and Toro y Moi) and multi-instrumentalist/producer Doug Stuart has moved with ingenuity, fusing psych-pop abstraction with dancefloor sensibilities. Through the body and mind, rhythm and lyricism, they make sense of the worlds around and within; 2021’s Feelings celebrated self-reflection; 2022’s Angelo EP processed loss, coinciding with the duo’s first headlining tour, which doubled down on the material’s desire to move. Now, across the playful expanse of Macro, arriving in 2024 on Ghostly International, Brijean engages different sides of themselves, the paradox of being alive. Murphy’s layered percussion and hypnotic, expressive vocals coupled with Stuart’s production and harmonic palette evoked shades of disco, ‘90s house, and a sly pop sensibility. ”A smooth, sumptuous, and soulful record,” said Bandcamp, who helped propel the group’s early following.
Novena Carmel If you find yourself in a room with Novena Carmel, you’re in the right place. Now based in LA, Novena was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area surrounded by her mother’s record collection and rooted in musical legacy. Her father, Sly Stone, fortified her funk foundation and passed on a love for the brilliance of “everyday people.” Carmel’s family connection to Brazil along with her Japanese bilingual and bicultural schooling, further expanded her world-view. Inspired by the guidance of one of her best friends and mentors, her grandfather, she moved to Los Angeles at 18, to attend UCLA. She has been a proud LA resident ever since with a deep appreciation for the city’s contributions to the global cultural landscape. When Novena launched her DJ career, it quickly took off, fueled by her global perspective, infectious energy and open-format music selections. In 2018 Novena Carmel was invited to join the DJ team at KCRW, and you can now catch her live at select events, and weekdays on-air as the host of KCRW’s Morning Becomes Eclectic.
José Galván started DJ-ing in 2008, when his job as an On-Air personality at the now defunct Indie 103.1fm demanded it. He had produced The Crystal Method’s weekly radio show, Community Service for 2 years, and with their guidance and some of their gear on loan, he took to the 1’s & 2’s one Cinco de Mayo. José has also travelled the world as a Tour Manager for Carla Morrison and DJ Z-Trip. The latter giving him the hands on experience to see some of the world’s biggest DJs in action up close and personal. His base in music theory, his stint with Z-Trip, and the fact that he constantly listens to so much new music, has helped him rapidly grow as a DJ and music selector. He’s held down lengthy residencies at downtown LA bars and in 2017, he was asked to open the Sonora Tent for Weekend 2 of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival. José currently hosts and programs Mondays at 10pm-12am on KCRW and is also the curator of the Pan Caliente feature which focuses on premiering new Musica Indie on their music blog.
