Dorian Wood: XAVELA LUX AETERNA is a chamber orchestra tribute to legendary Costa Rican and Mexican singer Chavela Vargas (1919-2012). In this live performance of XAVELA LUX AETERNA, Dorian Wood will be accompanied by Isaura String Quartet and guitarist Michael Corwin on Friday, May 20, 2022 at 8pm.
Dorian Wood is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Los Angeles whose subject matter is informed by her own perspective as a genderfluid brown person, a child of Costa Rican and Nicaraguan immigrants and an autodidact.
XAVELA LUX AETERNA toured internationally in 2019-20. The concert, originally scheduled for May 2020, will take place in Union Station’s historic Ticketing Hall.
About the Artist
DORIAN WOOD (b. 1975, Los Angeles pronouns: she/her/they/them) is a multi-disciplinary artist with a practice born from the desire to challenge traditions and systems that have contributed to the marginalization of people. Wood has performed at institutions, venues and festivals locally and internationally including The Broad, REDCAT, Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions, and Pacific Standard Time in Los Angeles as well extensively internationally in Spain at Museo Nacional Del Prado, World Pride, Festival Cruilla and the City Hall of Madrid, and in Mexico City and Germany. Wood has released over a dozen recordings and is a recipient of the Creative Capital Award, an Art Matters Foundation grant, and the Loghaven Artist Residency in Tennessee. From 2019 to 2020, Wood completed several successful international tours with their chamber orchestra tribute to Chavela Vargas, XAVELA LUX AETERNA. In 2022, Wood debuted their tribute to the singer Lhasa De Sela, entitled LHASA, at the Festival Internacional de Arte Sacro in Madrid, in collaboration with singer Carmina Escobar and composer Adrián Cortés.
