Blending footage from an everyday walk in Leimert Park Plaza, a drum circle, and the kickoff event of Annual Day of the Ancestors, the artworks displays the experience of being in Leimert Park.

Stained Glass Vignettes is an animated scroll of an imaginary “stained glass window” that merges Persian tile artifacts with visual elements sourced from surrounding neighborhoods along the K line.

Grandmas on the Go!

Artist(s):

Grandmas on the Go! presents itself as an interactive karaoke experience that engages with Leimert Park’s multicultural and stories history. The artwork emerges from the artist’s ongoing project that seeks to satirize and re-imagine public sites of leisure for grandmothers.

Kulture Keepers

Kulture Keepers is a paper-based animation and love letter to Los Angeles. The artwork emphases the diverse cultural contributions of Los Angeles communities and their manual labor through the use of labor-intensive traditional techniques that pay homage to the working hand and historical traditions of craft.

Bloom Song Sing

Inspired by Leimert Park’s neighborhood gardens and ever-present composition of sounds, Bloom Song Sing emulates poly rhythmic and multi-timbral qualities of music with blooming flowers as a means to celebrate the neighborhoods’ unique “visual music”.

Kingdom Day

Kingdom Day is an experimental Super 8mm film that captures the spirit and individuals of South Central’s Black community during the annual Martin Luther King Day Parade.

Bloom

Artist(s):

Bloom draws inspiration from the lush gardens cared for by the artists neighbors in Leimert Park, while also celebrating the growth of a new generation of youth in the community.

The True Story of Edges: Leimert Park

Artist(s):

The True Story of Edges: Leimert Park presents hair as a mutable space of memory and storytelling. The artwork features the artist with a video collage within her afro that mixes contemporary images with home videos, generating multiple and simultaneous narratives of the people who have lived within the surrounding communities. 

Bojagi (Shades of L.A.)

Featuring historical images from the Los Angeles Public Library’s Shades of L.A. archive, Bojagi (Shades of LA) weaves together photos of the diverse communities that have called Leimert Park home since the 1920’s.
