Underground Astronomy: Art, Geology and Cosmology with Mungo Thomson (Online Event)

July 19, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Free

Join future Grand Ave Arts/Bunker Hill Station artist Mungo Thomson and special guests Marty Hudson, the Director of the Turner Engineering Group and Maurice Henderson, former Education and Public Outreach Engineer at NASA for a free online public conversation about the unlikely but real crossovers between geology and cosmology.

The artist will share his upcoming artwork Negative Space (STScI-2015-02), recently installed in anticipation of future passengers on the subway platform hundreds of feet underneath downtown Los Angeles as part of the Regional Connector Transit Project Art Program.

In conversation with the artist, Hudson will introduce the tunnel boring machine (also known as a “mole”), a worm-like machine that excavated the tunnels of the Regional Connector, and talk about how tunneling traverses space and time by moving age-old earth dating back to the Pleistocene era.

Henderson will share his own experience with the Hubble telescope, a human-made device that also reveals the past as it orbits earth capturing images that expand our understanding of the size, age, and growth of the universe.
