On Saturday, April 18, join Metro Art and collaborators ArtCenter College of Design, Data Vandals, and Arroyos & Foothills Conservancy, for a special Earth Month public program at Los Angeles Union Station’s Waiting Room Gallery.
The Yellow Car and Los Angeles, an original exhibition organized by Metro Art and featuring materials sourced from Metro's Dorothy Peyton Gray Transportation Library and Archive, highlights the Yellow Cars of Los Angeles Railway Corporation (or LARy, for short) and LA’s early buses to offer a fond look back at Los Angeles transit history. Together, these early rail and bus lines are the foundations which shaped the transit system Metro is restoring today.
Broken News Through October 29 Union Station Historic Waiting Room As part of public programming to recognize the 150th Anniversary of the Chinese Massacre of 1871 in downtown Los Angeles, the Chinese American Museum, Chinese Historical Society of Southern California and Metro Art are co-presenting an exhibition titled Broken News in Union Station through October 29. A project by Adit Dhanushkodi, Broken News portrays the deeply troubling vein of anti-Chinese sentiment in the popular press – as relevant today as it was in 1871. The exhibition incorporates four original primary source newspaper headlines. For the purposes of the exhibition, Dhanuskodi also created two designed newspaper front pages to summarize the complete story, creating the composite from original primary sources. Cultural organizer Rosten Woo and historian Eugene Moy served as advisors on this exhibit, which is presented in conjunction with the 1871 Steering Committee of the LA Mayor’s Office Civic Memory Working Group.
