DESCRIPTION:RSVP NOW >>\nHear from artist Todd Gray at this rare inside look at the vision behind some of L.A.’s most engaging contemporary art projects. Gray will be in conversation with scholar and curator Dr. Tiffany E. Barber about his newly commissioned work for LACMA\, Octavia’s Gaze\, as well as his public art projects across Los Angeles\, including a new Metro Art commission for Wilshire/La Cienega station\, giving insight into his inspirations\, creative process\, and approach to making art for both museums and public spaces. \nFollowing the talk at LACMA from 2–3 pm\, attendees will be able to view Octavia’s Gaze and other artworks in the David Geffen Galleries. At 4 pm\, Gray will lead a Metro Art tour at Metro’s Wilshire/La Cienega station\, where he will share his new public artwork Mining the Archive: S. Charles Lee\, Architect. Please allow at least 10 minutes to walk from LACMA to the Wilshire/Fairfax station entrance\, where the tour will depart at 4 pm sharp. Kyle has performed in the most esteemed national jazz clubs\, notably Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and SMOKE Jazz Club\, culminating in a weekly residency at Small’s Jazz Club lasting nearly three years. One of Poole’s chief missions is to expand jazz’s audience by incorporating all dance styles of music\, reaching back to ragtime and bebop\, while forging ahead all the way to funk\, hip-hop\, and beyond. DESCRIPTION:Join Metro Art-commissioned artist Ken Gonzales-Day and LACMA curators Eve Schillo\, Associate Curator of the Wallis Annenberg Photography Department\, and Rita Gonzalez\, Terri and Michael Smooke Curator and Department Head of Contemporary Art\, as they delve into Gonzales-Day’s latest artwork\, Urban Excavation: Ancestors\, Avatars\, Bodhisattvas\, Buddhas\, Sages\, Spirits\, Symbols\, and Other Objects. This site-specific installation\, in process for the future Metro Wilshire/Fairfax station\, draws inspiration from LACMA’s extensive permanent collection. Learn about the collaborative relationship between Gonzales-Day\, LACMA\, and Metro in creating a new public artwork for the Los Angeles County transit system in this enlightening conversation. \n> Learn more + RSVP\n  \n \n  \nKEN GONZALES-DAY’s interdisciplinary and conceptually grounded projects consider the history of photography\, the construction of race\, and the limits of representational systems\, from lynching photography to museum displays. Gonzales-Day’s work has been exhibited internationally and is in the permanent collections of The Getty\, LACMA\, MOCA\, MoMA\, The Chicago Art Institute\, The National Gallery of Art\, National Portrait Gallery\, and the American Art Museum in D.C.\, among others. His monographs include Lynching in the West: 1850–1935 (Duke) and Profiled (LACMA\, 2011). Gonzales-Day holds the Fletcher Jones Chair in Art and at Scripps College and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in photography in 2017.

DESCRIPTION:Join us to create a unique representation of your image inspired by LACMA’s Black American Portraits\, an exhibition that reframes portraiture to center Black American subjects\, sitters\, and spaces\, and Metro Art’s We Are… Portraits of Metro Riders by Local Artists\, a multi-site exhibition featuring transit riders throughout L.A. County that presents personal and universal stories and invites broad public participation. Guests will be invited to create their own portraits using artistic techniques inspired by the process of artists in the LACMA and LA Metro exhibitions. Artist Chelle Barbour\, whose work is featured in both exhibitions\, will facilitate the workshop. \nCo-presented in partnership with LACMA. \nHealth screening required.
