Explore the artists’ creative process through hands-on\, art-making activities connected to their site-specific artwork commissions for the future D Line Subway Extension Project\, Section 3 stations serving UCLA\, the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center and beyond.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome.  \n  \nDetails  \nSaturday\, March 14\, 2026\, 1pm-4pm \nHammer Museum | 10899 Wilshire Blvd.\, Los Angeles\, CA 90024  \n  \nGetting There     \nGo Metro to the event and discover art along the way! Metro Buses 1\, 20\, and 720 all stop within walking distance of the venue. Plan your trip using the Transit app\, the trip planner at metro.net or by calling 323.GO.METRO.  \nMetro Art transforms transit into a creative experience\, featuring one of the largest collections of public art in the nation!    \n  \nParking   \nMetered and two-hour street parking is available within a block of the Hammer Museum. Please note that the Hammer Museum is unable to validate parking for metered spots.  \nConvenient self-parking is available under the museum. Parking entrances are located on the east side of Westwood Boulevard (northbound) or on the west side of Glendon Boulevard (southbound)\, between Wilshire Boulevard and Lindbrook Drive.  \nThere is a $8 flat rate after 5 p.m. on weekdays\, and all day on weekends. Accessible parking is provided on levels P1 and P3. \nGet detailed directions for accessible parking here. DESCRIPTION:A series of free online conversations with creatives about the state of making. Join Meg Linton\, independent curator and writer\, as she virtually visits the studios of known and emerging artists\, exploring their work\, influence\, philosophy\, and creative process. \nSandow Birk has been commissioned to create a site-specific artwork for the future Westwood/VA Hospital Metro Station in the Brentwood/Westwood neighborhood. Sandow will discuss his past projects\, the steps involved in creating public artworks\, and engage with the audience regarding potential ideas for representing aspects of the neighborhood and community\, past and present\, for his Metro station artwork. \n> The free online talk is co-presented with Brentwood Art Center and will take place via Zoom.\nREGISTRATION FULL\nSANDOW BIRK (b. 1962\, Detroit) is a Los Angeles artist who develops expansive\, multi-media art projects that deal with a variety of contemporary subjects\, including inner-city violence\, graffiti\, social and political conflicts\, prisons\, Islam\, surfing\, and skateboarding. Birk earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design (now Otis College of Art and Design) in 1988. His many awards include an NEA International Exchange Scholarship (1995)\, a Guggenheim Fellowship (1996)\, a Fulbright Scholarship (1997)\, and a Gottlieb Foundation Individual Support Grant (2021). His work has been exhibited internationally and is in the collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)\, Metropolitan Museum of Art\, Harvard University Art Museum\, Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Roma in Italy\, and Kunstmuseum Reutlingen in Germany. \nBRENTWOOD ART CENTER (BAC) provides visual arts education for diverse students of all ages\, backgrounds\, and experiences through in-person and online learning. BAC provides equitable community access to arts programming throughout the greater Los Angeles region. SUMMARY:On the Street: Urban Sketching with Sandow Birk (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Weds 10/12 – This event is at capacity! To learn about future events\, please sign up for the Metro Art email list.  \nJoin Metro-commissioned artist and urban sketcher Sandow Birk for a three-hour sketching workshop on the streets of Westwood. Birk will draw and discuss sketching in the urban environment and how this process informs the design of his artwork for the future Westwood/VA Hospital station\, part of the under-construction Purple (D Line) Extension Transit Project. \nCheck out some of the local sights and landmarks Sandow Birk is including in his future station artwork. \nThe urban sketching activity will include three to four stops with dedicated time for sketching at each location. Materials will be provided. Space is limited to a maximum of 12 participants. \nThis class is outdoors\, requires group movement throughout the neighborhood and is subject to weather. Estimated distance will be approximately one mile.
