Watch the Academy Award®-winning documentary short about L.A.’s craftspeople who keep the city’s music alive. \n \nOnce commonplace in the United States\, today Los Angeles is by far the largest and one of the last American cities to provide free and freely repaired musical instruments to its public schoolchildren\, a continuous service since 1959.  \nFrom Academy Award®-winning directing duo Kris Bowers and Ben Proudfoot\, The Last Repair Shop grants an all access pass to the nondescript downtown warehouse where a dwindling handful of devoted craftspeople keep over 80\,000 student instruments in good repair. \nWitness the profound life stories of four staff master craftspeople as well as the students whose lives have been transformed by their instrument. In the repair people’s stories\, music has been the continuous thread that has mended their hearts and brought them to where they are now — fixing broken instruments to get them back into the longing hands of Los Angeles’ public school youth. \n> Watch trailer\n\n  \nKRIS BOWERS is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker and an award-winning composer. His most recent film\, The Last Repair Shop\, won an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film and won the award for short documentary at the Critics Choice Documentary Awards. Bowers co-directed the Searchlight Pictures and L.A. Times Studio-backed film alongside Ben Proudfoot\, which originally premiered at Telluride in 2023 and spotlights some of the individuals working at a repair shop in Los Angeles\, the last American city to provide freely repaired instruments to its public school students.  \nIn 2020\, Bowers co-directed the Academy Award-nominated documentary short film\, A Concerto is a Conversation with Proudfoot. The film\, a New York Times Op-Doc\, was executive produced by Ava DuVernay and premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. He also produced\, scored and stars in the 2023 documentary\, ANTHEM with director Pete Nicks\, which follows Bowers and Grammy-winning music producer DJ Dahi as they take a musical journey traveling across America in a bold experiment to reimagine America’s National Anthem. \nIn addition to his filmmaking\, Bowers is known for his thought-provoking playing style\, creating genre-defying film compositions that pay homage to his classical and jazz roots. Bowers has composed acclaimed music for film\, television\, documentary and video games and has collaborated with musicians and artists across genres\, including Kobe Bryant\, Mahershala Ali\, Ava DuVernay and Shonda Rhimes. \nBowers has multiple projects in development through Et Al Studios Productions\, a production company himself and his wife Briana Henry founded. \nAn Academy Award®-winning short documentary director and entrepreneur\, BEN PROUDFOOT is the creative force behind Breakwater Studios. The studio’s work has been recognized by the Academy Awards®\, The Emmys\, The Peabody Awards\, Critics Choice Documentary Awards\, The James Beard Awards\, the Sundance Film Festival\, Telluride\, and the Tribeca Film Festival among others.  \nProudfoot was named one of Forbes “30 Under 30” for his leadership and innovation in the brand-funded documentary space. He hails from Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, and is a graduate of the University of Southern California’s School of Cinematic Arts. Proudfoot is an accomplished sleight-of-hand magician and has performed at The Magic Castle in Los Angeles.

Preferential seating for first 20 people who show their TAP cards at Metro Art table.\n  \nOn February 23\, Metro Art Presents will host a free screening of Geoff McFetridge: Drawing a Life followed by a conversation and audience Q&A with L.A. writer Alissa Walker and artist Geoff McFetridge in Union Station’s historic ticketing hall. A conversation with McFetridge and author Alissa Walker will follow the screening. The film is a poetic and intimate look into the life and work of one of the most visionary artists of his time\, while also exploring the universal questions of what makes a fulfilling life. \nGeoff McFetridge’s art is everywhere. From countless gallery exhibits\, sides of buildings\, title designs for films by Sofia Coppola and Spike Jonze\, to collaborations with Vans\, Warby Parker\, Nike\, and more\, he has undoubtedly influenced the way the world looks. No stranger to the public transit space\, McFetridge spent several years developing a high visibility artwork for one of Metro’s K Line stations. \nThe antithesis of the archetypal artist fueled by drugs\, alcohol\, and chaos\, what sets the prodigious McFetridge apart is his quest for balance as a father\, ultramarathoner\, and designer. In Geoff McFetridge: Drawing a Life\, fellow artist and director Dan Covert offers unprecedented access into Geoff’s multicolored world\, painting an intimate portrait of a man whose work is guided by intention and authenticity. \nDeeply thoughtful and illuminating\, Drawing a Life reveals the details of McFetridge’s life and work while delving further into the universal questions of what makes a fulfilling life and how to live with intention in the limited time we all have. \n> View the trailer\n \n \nThroughout his long and diverse career\, Geoff McFetridge has worked across a vast array of mediums from poetry to animation\, graphics to 3D\, textile and wallpaper to paintings. McFetridge has exhibited in galleries worldwide including Louis Buhl\, Detroit (2022); Gallery Target\, Tokyo (2022); Cooper Cole\, Toronto (2021); Half Gallery\, New York (2021); V1 Gallery\, Copenhagen (2020); Blum and Poe\, Los Angeles (2020); PlayMountain\, Tokyo (2013); Heath Gallery\, Los Angeles (2011) and New Image Art\, West Hollywood (2006). Included in the Beautiful Losers exhibition (curated by Aaron Rose and Christian Strike) which debuted at CAC\, Cincinnati in 2004\, he has\, also\, been featured in exhibitions at the Walker Art Center\, Vancouver Art Gallery\, Yale University Art Museum and Geffen Contemporary at MoCA Los Angeles. As a designer\, he has worked extensively with brands including Hermes\, Vans\, Undefeated\, Patagonia & Apple just to name a few. Recently he has made public works for LA Metro & SOFI Stadium LA. Winner of the 2016 Cooper-Hewitt Smithsonian National Design Award and the AIGA Medal in 2019\, McFetridge received his BFA from the Alberta College of Art & Design and an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts. \nAlissa Walker is a writer based in Los Angeles covering transportation\, housing\, urban design\, public space\, and environmental policy. She is the 2021 recipient of the Steven Heller Prize for Cultural Commentary for her writing on design and urbanism\, and played herself on the traffic safety episode of Adam Conover’s show Adam Ruins Everything\, “Adam Ruins a Murder.” Alissa lives in L.A.’s Historic Filipinotown neighborhood\, where she is the co-host of LA Podcast\, an avid ice cream consumer\, and a mom to the city’s two most enthusiastic public transit riders. \n> For more information\, visit drawing-a-life.eventbrite.com
