DESCRIPTION:Join us to create a unique representation of your image inspired by LACMA’s Black American Portraits\, an exhibition that reframes portraiture to center Black American subjects\, sitters\, and spaces\, and Metro Art’s We Are… Portraits of Metro Riders by Local Artists\, a multi-site exhibition featuring transit riders throughout L.A. County that presents personal and universal stories and invites broad public participation. Guests will be invited to create their own portraits using artistic techniques inspired by the process of artists in the LACMA and LA Metro exhibitions. Artist Chelle Barbour\, whose work is featured in both exhibitions\, will facilitate the workshop. \nCo-presented in partnership with LACMA. \nHealth screening required. DESCRIPTION:Deadline Extended! All entries due by Friday\, April 8\, 2022\n\n\nSeeking artistic and creative high school students grades 9-12 with roots in the Crenshaw District\, Inglewood\, Westchester\, the LAX Community and vicinity in South LA.  Create an artwork that celebrates your community along the route of the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project—and have the opportunity to receive $500 if your artwork is selected!  \nArtworks by students in grades 9-12 will be selected as inspiration for eight commemorative pins that Metro will distribute in celebration of the opening of the Crenshaw/LAX Transit Project—one pin for each of the eight new station. Eight student artists who submit artwork to the contest will be selected by a committee of local community leaders and cultural figures.  \n\n\nThe pins will be distributed free of charge to the public during the opening of the new rail stations: Expo/Crenshaw\, Martin Luther King Jr.\, Leimert Park\, Hyde Park\, Fairview Heights\, Downtown Inglewood\, Westchester/Veterans and Aviation/Century. \nThis contest is open to high school students only\, grades 9-12. One entry per student will be reviewed. \n\n\nAll entries must be received by the deadline of Friday\, April 8\, 2022.  Online entries must be submitted by 5pm (PDT). Dickerson has been carrying the torch since he was 13\, playing in his first rockabilly band in his hometown of Columbia\, Missouri. He moved to Los Angeles at the age of 22 and proceeded to found his primary band\, Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-Fonics\, his newest group\, Deke Dickerson and the Whippersnappers\, as well as several side projects. Dickerson has provided rootsy music for a slew of television shows and movie projects and has his own signature guitar\, manufactured by the Hallmark Guitar Company of Maryland. \n\n  \n\nCat and Adolfo of Time 2 Swing \n\nAdolfo and Cat\nIG: @time2swing\nFB: https://www.facebook.com/time2swing  \nHusband and wife dance duo Adolfo and Cat of time2swing\, are a hobby turned passion! They have been avidly dancing since 2013. When they met in high school\, playing various sports\, they never considered themselves dancers and never paid attention to the dance floor. In late 2012\, however\, Adolfo and Cat saw couples dancing Swing and Lindy Hop at Disneyland and immediately exclaimed they wanted to learn “how they did that!” (their actual words) They have been trained in various dances\, such as Latin and Ballroom\, too. DESCRIPTION:Metro Art Presents Poetry O’Clock\, a poetry exchange pop-up in the historic Union Station Information Booth\, on Friday\, December 10 from 1:00-7:00 pm. Drop in for reconnection\, recollection and respite as the booth is transformed by floral artist botanica brava to host live writing by poets Taz Ahmed\, traci kato-kiriyama\, and féi hernandez.  Share your story during each featured poet’s shift at the information desk to receive a short original poem written on-the-spot (and inspired by you!) to create a portrait of the moment and time stamp your day.  Poets are presented in collaboration with the Poetry Society of America. The pop-up also coincides with Metro Art’s forthcoming exhibition in the Union Station Passageway Art Gallery\, We Are…Portraits of Metro Riders by Local Artists.  \n1:00-3:00 pm— Taz Ahmed\n3:00-5:00 pm— traci kato-kiriyama\n5:00-7:00 pm— féi hernandez\n \nSave the date and RSVP via Eventbrite. She creates at the intersection of counternarratives and culture-shifting as a South Asian American Muslim 2nd-gen woman. She has published two poetry collections Emdash and Ellipses (2016) & The Day The Moon Split in Two (2020)\, is featured in Tia Chucha’s Coiled Serpent (2016) and her poetry has been commissioned by the Center for Cultural Power\, PolicyLink\, the Garment Worker Center\, KPCC’s Unheard LA\, and more.  \n\n\ntraci kato-kiriyama\, based on unceded Tongva land in the south bay of Los Angeles\, is an award-winning multi-\, inter- and transdisciplinary artist\, writer/performer\, theatre deviser\, cultural producer\, and community organizer grounded in collaborative process\, collective self-determination\, and art+community. She is a performer & principal writer for PULLproject Ensemble\, two-time NET recipient; NEFA 2021-22 finalist for their show TALES OF CLAMOR.  Their work is also featured in a wide swath of media and print publications (incl. NPR; PBS; Elle.com; Entropy; Chapparal Canyon Press; Tia Chucha Press; Bamboo Ridge Press; Heyday Books; Regent Press). \n\n\nféi hernandez is a trans\, Inglewood-raised\, formerly undocumented immigrant artist\, writer\, healer. They have been published in POETRY\, Pank Magazine\, Oxford Review of Books\, Frontier Poetry\, The Breakbeat Poets Vol. 4: LatiNext\, amongst others. DESCRIPTION:Broken News  \nThrough October 29  \nUnion Station Historic Waiting Room \nAs part of public programming to recognize the 150th Anniversary of the Chinese Massacre of 1871 in downtown Los Angeles\, the Chinese American Museum\, Chinese Historical Society of Southern California and Metro Art are co-presenting an exhibition titled Broken News in Union Station through October 29. \nA project by Adit Dhanushkodi\, Broken News portrays the deeply troubling vein of anti-Chinese sentiment in the popular press – as relevant today as it was in 1871. The exhibition incorporates four original primary source newspaper headlines. For the purposes of the exhibition\, Dhanuskodi also created two designed newspaper front pages to summarize the complete story\, creating the composite from original primary sources. \nCultural organizer Rosten Woo and historian Eugene Moy served as advisors on this exhibit\, which is presented in conjunction with the 1871 Steering Committee of the LA Mayor’s Office Civic Memory Working Group. \n  \nEl Pueblo Commission Vice President David Louie\, Chinese American Museum Executive Director Michael Truong and Board President Gay Yuen\, Broken News artist Adit Dhanushkodi\, 1871 Steering Committee Programming Co-Chair Rosten Woo\, Chinese Historical Society of Southern California Board Member Eugene Moy and Board President Susan Dickson. DESCRIPTION:In the spirit of promoting and highlighting uplifting messages about connecting with and caring for one another during challenging times and beyond\, Metro is piloting a new series\, Silver Linings. Local artists are commissioned to create original artworks that visualize and encourage expressions of connection and care. Artworks created for the series will be reproduced for display in Metro’s transportation system to serve as reminders that acts of care\, however large or small\, are also essential and can be the silver lining on tough days. \nThese new artworks will be on display as posters in Metro buses from December 2020 through July 2021.
