Lisa D on the E is a timeless and contemporary portrait of Walker’s friend and fellow artist. Lisa—whose image, as a woman of color, has been excluded from the art-historical canon—is shown serenely lost in thought and immersed in the rhythms of the train in a pose inherited from Renaissance portraiture.
