Project Description

A Gift to the World is a self-portrait celebrating the intersection of Inglewood’s Latinx and Black communities. The sunflowers– a gift from Mexico to the world–along with the outline of a pre-Columbian Colima dog motif pay tribute to the artist’s mestizo heritage while the colorful, abstracted map acknowledges the area’s history of redlining and gentrification.

About the Artist

HEDY TORRES‘s paintings and works on paper are motivated by human rights, homelessness and social justice. The Los Angeles–based Mexican artist earned an AA from Porterville College, and bachelor’s and master’s degrees in painting from California State University, Northridge. Her work has been exhibited in Los Angeles galleries.
