Project Description
Grandmas on the Go! presents itself as an interactive karaoke experience that engages with Leimert Park’s multicultural and storied history. The 65+ population is the largest age group in Leimert Park, a neighborhood that once used to house a thriving Japanese American population before the Japanese internment order took place. Emerging from the artist’s ongoing project that seeks to satirize and re-imagine public sites of leisure for grandmothers, Grandmas on the Go! pays homage to the elderly community while also imagining a new utopia where elders are cared for and seen.
About the Artist
YOSHIE SAKAI is a multidisciplinary artist, who exposes the absurdities of a manipulative social structure while at the same time humorously struggling and reveling in it as a participant.
About Love, Leimert
Love, Leimert is a digital media love letter to Leimert Park, now presenting at the K Line Leimert Park Station. Connecting Metro riders to the past and present, Love, Leimert, honors the people who call Leimert Park home and those dedicated to preserving its legacy.
